Sometimes you need a little perspective

"What are you having?" is the first question people ask nowadays. When we tell them we don't know, the response is usually 1. I have a girl, hope for a girl, they're (insert great girl qualities here) or vice versa about boys and 2. What do you hope it is?
When we respond with oh, we just want a healthy baby, they usually give us the side-eye. Well it's true, once you get pregnant and learn all of the things that can go wrong, it really seems like a miracle to just be given a healthy baby and sometimes you need to be reminded of that. Today, one of the youth I work with at church was diagnosed with mast cell leukemia, which carries of a prognosis of only 6 months survival following diagnosis, and it gave me some perspective. Every day with Squishy is a gift. The backache, the shortness of breath, the constant peeing, the sleepless nights are just a symptom of this healthy baby growing and today I will be thankful instead of cranky. (But if I have one more night of 4 hours of sleep, I can't make any promises about what tomorrow will bring.)
